A web based information system for estimating atmospheric corrosivity

Information on the corrosivity in a given area is crucial for proper selection of materials, corrosion protection methods and lifetime estimations. Such data have clear economic impact and are thus often requested by civil engineers, corrosion experts and decision makers. The corrosivity of different metals such as carbon steel, zinc, copper and aluminium can be estimated if data of environmental parameters for the actual location are available. 

Swerea KIMAB needs a web based system for estimating atmospheric corrosivity. As a first step to reach this goal, the following parts need to evaluated and examined:

  • Different options for a graphical user interface for input of geographical data (point, area or route), possibly based on services from existing providers such as google maps;

  • Different options for a framework for handling gridded data of environmental parameters in txt and netcdf formats to ensure that continuous model development can be implemented efficiently;

  • Different options for a graphical user interface for output of corrosivity data and uncertainties for a user familiar with but not expert in atmospheric corrosion.

The system shall be built on open standard components and shall be easy to both use and

administer. Modern structure is a must, preferably built as a module incorporated in an on module based content management systems like Wordpress or Drupal. The system should be assessable from mobile units.

The goal is to examine different options and to develop at least one prototype/example that can be used for demonstration purposes to customers based on a simple model with existing environmental data. Development of the corrosivity model is outside the scope of the project. If licensing fees for software and content must be included the cost shall be estimated and put in relation to all available alternatives.

The work will be performed at Swerea KIMAB (Kista).
