Master thesis: Evaluation of industrial possibilities for electromagnetic transducer (EMAT) for non-destructive material characterization on-line

1 Place

Goal
To evaluate the possibility of measuring various material properties, e.g. grain size and texture with an electromagnetic transducer (EMAT). This will be carried out by both theoretical and experimental analysis. The aim of this thesis is to increase the knowledge of the possibilities and practical limitations of an EMAT for in-situ material characterization for industrial purposes.

Background
In todays metal industry the processes are typically controlled by measuring process parameters e.g. temperature, velocity, force etc. However, there are still critical material related parameters such as grain-size, texture and phase fraction that still require expensive and time consuming destructive testing after production to be measured. These measured material parameters cannot easily be used in process control because of the time between processing and measurement can extend to several days after manufacturing. EMAT is a non-destructive evaluation method that is commonly used for thickness gauging but might be able to provide additional information about the critical material related parameters in-line and be integrated directly into the process control systems.

The thesis work will consist of a literature study, experiments using EMAT in lab and analysis of the EMAT signals that have been acquired. The analysis will be performed in the Matlab environment and build upon existing Matlab classes already developed at Swerim.

The results will be in the form of a technical report and an oral presentation for representatives from the metal industry.

Performing thesis work at Swerim will give you the experience of working as a researcher in a stimulating environment with modern laboratories, in a team with skilled researchers developing tomorrow’s technologies for industry. You will have the possibility to meet and connect with industrial partners and to understand their needs and interest. Swerim rewards the student with 50 000 SEK for an approved master thesis (30hp).
